Chapter Twelve

“Before we go any further,” Pain interjected, “do you have any carbonated liquids in this suite of yours?”

“Only a couple of half-bottles of seltzer in the mini-fridge.” Evan nodded toward the small kitchenette.

“That’ll work.” He passed the Glock to Agony and resisted the temptation to make a snarky comment about the safeties before he headed to the fridge.

“We visited the house.” She began the interrogation with no attempt to be anything but direct.

“Who hasn’t?” The man sniffed. “Which agency were you representing when you visited or are you with the police?”

“Do I look like a cop?”

“Well, if you are, you certainly aren’t the Officer Friendly kind.” He stated the obvious with a good dollop of sarcasm.

“You got that right.” She had a love-hate relationship with the Officer Friendly Campaign. “But no, I am not currently a cop and the big lug and I”—she nodded toward the kitchenette where her partner was fiddling with something—“are simply private eyes who were requested to look into a murder. Would you like to guess what conclusion we came up with?”

“Probably the correct one.” He hung his head. “Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here.”

Pain returned with one of the small bottles of seltzer that he now shook vigorously. He stepped through the bedroom door where the four bodies were still prone but were due to come around soon. Without looking at either of them, he emptied the bottle’s seriously fizzing liquid on the floor between them, stepped out quickly, and closed the door. He gestured them away from it as he stuffed a handful of paper towels between the door and the carpet.

“Did you just poison them all?” Evan was aghast.

“Poison?” The agent was deeply offended at the accusation. “Of course not. What I provided them with was a potion, not a poison. There is a big difference. When they wake up, they will be disoriented and have a hard time standing without some assistance. It will, however, allow us to continue our little chat without having to be concerned about any interruptions. So how about we all take a seat, settle in, and have a no-bullshit conversation?”

He swung a chair out from against a wall and faced it toward the couch. Evan took the offered chair and the partners shared the sofa.

“I…” The man grimaced. “I don’t know where to start.”

“Then we will keep it simple,” Agony explained. “We will ask one question at a time and you will do your best to answer it honestly.”

“Will you kill me if I give an answer that doesn’t please you?” The man was skeptical.

“We haven’t killed you yet.” She applied her thespian skills to the good cop role. “And we already know most of the answers. We merely want to hear you confirm them and enlighten us on some details that we might have missed. I promise that no matter what you say, I will not kill you.”

“What about him?” He nodded toward Pain. “Will he make the same promise?”

“Promises are made to be broken,” her partner answered for himself, “as are bones.
